Ed has worked in the pharmaceutical industry for many years. He was moved by seeing people suffering from a lack of simple medicine and basic first aid. Ed retired from Gilead Sciences in 2023, where he worked for 12 years, overseeing the company’s Southern California commercial manufacturing operation. Gilead Sciences is a global pharmaceutical company that specializes in treatments for infectious diseases, HIV AIDS, and cancer treatments. He has a unique perspective on the healthcare needs of developing countries and has traveled to Africa over a dozen times in the last 20 years. The mission of Women of Vision is to educate others about the plight of women and children living in poverty worldwide. This helped to prepare her for the work she is currently doing at CompassioNow. She led two mission teams to Cambodia in 2004 and 2006 and has traveled to Africa eight times. Dr. Pence is a certified FFI trainer and also serves in other anti-human trafficking ministries. Dr. Pence is Founder, CEO and President of Symbion Research International, Inc., which provides strategic regulatory and product development consulting for pharmaceuticals, biopharmaceuticals, and medical devices. Dr. Pence is a RAPS (Regulatory Affairs Professionals Society) Fellow (FRAPS), a peer-reviewed credential for which she was selected based on her experience, contributions, and leadership in the regulatory profession. She also holds the U.S. Regulatory Affairs Certification (RAC) designation. In her more than 45 years of experience, Dr. Pence has been involved in the development of treatments and diagnostics for a number of infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS. Roughly 1200 patients visit the clinic each month, as the closest hospital is located in Gisenyi, some 24 km away, and very difficult for the local people to travel there. Dr. Gilbert Kibinakanwa, along with the support of ALARM, decided to open a clinic to serve the roughly 124,000 inhabitants of the rural areas of Bisoro, Nyarusange, and Kayokwe. Richard Ely is a semi-retired electronic engineer. He works part-time doing signal integrity for a Silicon Valley tech company. He holds a BS and MS in Physics from Penn State and an MSEE from Virginia Tech. Richard started supporting his wife, Brenda, in her interest in Compassion Tea, helping her as she became more involved. In 2020 both he and Brenda became members of the Board. Brenda Ely graduated from Ambassador College in Big Sandy, Texas. She is a homemaker who homeschooled her children for many of their K-12 years. She is very active in her church fellowship and in a woman’s Bible Study group. She is a longtime supporter of Compassion Tea and the cause of CompassioNow. As a cybersecurity analyst for the U.S. government and an intelligence analyst in the U.S. National Guard, he combines technical expertise with a deep understanding of global systems and security. With a degree in International Relations from the University of San Diego, Christian is passionate about sustainable, community-driven solutions that promote health, stability, and resilience. Deeply rooted in his faith, Christian serves actively in his church’s high school ministry and co-leads a life group alongside his wife, Becca. Becca Lee has a deep passion for people and global impact. She earned her degree in International Business and Mandarin Chinese from Gordon College, where she founded a nonprofit supporting the “left-behind children” of rural China—those whose parents moved to the cities for work. After several years studying and working in China, Becca continued finding creative ways to make a difference, using her clothing business to raise funds for causes close to her heart, including CompassioNow. Today, she pours that same heart for service into her local church, volunteering in the high school ministry, co-leading a life group with her husband, Christian, and helping with church communications through the weekly bulletin newsletter and social media. He is also the President of Create Hope, a non-profit service agency for missionaries. By engaging in both the for-profit and non-profit spaces, these organizations are designed to share the gospel of Jesus Christ by actively helping others through the local churches. Brian grew up in a family business, spent six years in corporate America, invested twenty-years with a missionary agency serving as IT Director, Director of Operations and Director of Business Initiatives, and has led the HOPE Coffee team from its inception. He holds a B.S. Degree in Missions and a Masters’ degree in Biblical Counseling from Calvary University and Calvary Theological Seminary. Brian and his wife, Jennifer live in Mesquite, Texas and have three grown daughters.
